WASHINGTON, DC -- Oregon Senator Jeff Merkley is moving forward with new legislation that would crack down on unfair trade practices around the world. Merkley, along with Senator Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), introduced the Level the Playing Field in Global Trade Act, Wednesday. The act is an attempt at ensuring that sub-standard wages, safety practices and environmental protections are taken into account when calculating subsidies and duties for foreign products.
Senator Merkley said Oregon workers suffer when foreign competitors lower prices by cutting corners. His plan would also offer incentives to companies for adhering to high global standards.
