Portland Letter Carrier Sentenced For Stealing Mail

PORTLAND, OR -- A longtime mail carrier who admitted taking money out of cards and letters was sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Portland to three years of probation.  Bruce Douglas Menzies, 54, Tigard, pleaded guilty to mail theft.  He also must pay a $2,500 fine and $300 in restitution.
Menzies, a 23-year veteran with the Postal Service, was arrested in March after an investigation triggered by a grandmother who wondered why money she mailed to children did not arrive.  Menzies says he spent the money on alcohol.
